How much does an asphalt driveway cost in Florida?
A straightforward Florida asphalt driveway often starts around $5–$12 per square foot installed, but size, base repair, drainage, access, and location can move a real bid outside that range. Build the estimate from the ground up to understand why.

Florida climate recommendation
Hot & Humid (Southeast/Gulf Coast)
High temperatures, heavy rainfall, and long wet seasons put both binder and base drainage under stress.
- Recommended mix
- Stiff-graded HMA with polymer-modified binder (PG 76-22 or local equivalent)
- A stiffer, moisture-resistant system helps limit rutting under sustained heat and stripping during frequent rain.
- ⚠ Thickness & base
- Keep the asphalt design traffic-based; consider 1–2 extra inches of free-draining aggregate base where soils stay wet.
- 💧 Drainage
- Target about a 2% cross-slope and a positive outlet. Low-lying sites may need edge or French drains.
Common issues in Florida
- •Heat-induced rutting and shoving
- •Moisture damage and stripping
- •Oxidation and UV degradation
- •Sinkhole-related or saturated-subgrade settlement
State-level guidance only. Confirm the binder grade and pavement section with the local specification or supplier.
Start with square footage, not a package price
Measure the full paved length and average width. A 20-by-40-foot driveway is 800 square feet. At 3 inches compacted, hot mix at 145 lb/ft³ weighs about 14.5 tons before allowances, or roughly 15.7 tons with the calculator’s default 5% waste and 3% compaction allowance. At $100–$150 per ton, that puts mix material around $1,570–$2,350 before delivery.
That material number is an audit point, not an installed quote. A contractor still has to mobilize people and equipment, remove or prepare the existing surface, establish grade, place aggregate where needed, coordinate trucks, lay the asphalt while hot, compact edges and the mat, and clean up. On a small driveway, mobilization can be a large share of the price.
| Driveway size | Adjusted tons | 2026 material estimate |
|---|---|---|
| 10 × 20 ft | 3.9 tons | $390–$590 |
| 20 × 20 ft | 7.8 tons | $780–$1,180 |
| 20 × 40 ft | 15.7 tons | $1,570–$2,350 |
| 24 × 50 ft | 23.5 tons | $2,350–$3,530 |
Florida base and drainage costs matter
Florida does not have one soil condition. Some sites drain quickly; others have organic, sandy, or moisture-sensitive layers that cannot support pavement without correction. A low driveway that holds water needs grade and drainage work before it needs blacktop. Paving over a saturated or pumping base can produce depressions, edge breakup, and cracking long before the surface binder wears out.
A quote should state what happens below the asphalt. Ask whether unsuitable material is removed, how many inches of aggregate are included, how compaction is verified, and where runoff goes. If excavation is priced as an allowance, ask for the unit rate and how the contractor will document extra quantities.
Is 3 inches enough?
Three compacted inches over a stable, well-drained base is a sensible estimate for a passenger-car driveway. Regular delivery trucks, RVs, dumpsters, trailers, or weak support can justify a thicker section. The heavy area may be localized: a dumpster pad or turning point can receive a different design from the rest of the driveway.
Clarify whether a bid describes loose placement depth or final compacted thickness. Asphalt shrinks during rolling, so “three inches laid” is not necessarily three inches finished. Also ask if depth is an average or a minimum, and whether the price includes one course or separate base and surface lifts.
Compare three Florida bids fairly
Give each contractor the same project limits and traffic description, then compare paved area, demolition, base, compacted asphalt depth, mix, drainage, edges, permits, cleanup, warranty, and payment schedule. Confirm who is responsible for a driveway apron or right-of-way permit. A lower bid that excludes base repairs is not equivalent to a higher bid that includes them.
Verify the business and insurance, request recent local references, and avoid pressure to sign because a crew has “leftover asphalt.” A legitimate schedule can still be efficient—nearby work may reduce mobilization—but scope, price, and warranty should be written before placement. Never use the calculator as a reason to ignore a site-specific recommendation; use it to ask sharper questions.

What is the average cost of a Florida asphalt driveway in 2026?
A practical installed planning range is about $5–$12 per square foot as of 2026. Small projects, drainage repair, excavation, difficult access, or premium scopes can fall above it.
How many tons are needed for a 20 × 20 Florida driveway?
At 3 inches compacted, a 20-by-20-foot driveway needs about 7.25 tons before allowances, or about 7.8 tons with 5% waste and a 3% compaction allowance.
Is 3 inches of asphalt enough in Florida?
Three compacted inches is a useful passenger-car starting point over a sound, well-drained base. Weak or saturated soil and regular heavy vehicles may require an engineered section.
